Our new publication in Nature Ecology & Evolution suggests, that the bilaterian anus emerged using a present opening through which sperm got released. The sperm duct of the shared last common ancestor of us and the acoelomorph worms connected with the digestive tissue and formed a common opening - a cloaca.
